Budgeting For a Low Waste Lifestyle – 3 Points To Go!

One of the popular arguments I am met with when I advocate a low waste lifestyle is that it is expensive! It leaves me baffled and also confident and in awe of my ability to handle finance! Also, remember that it used to be THE way of living before it became a fashionable term. Ask your parents and grandparents.

First of all, a quick overview of a low waste lifestyle. It is a way of living that allows you to:

  • waste less
  • pollute less
  • keep natural resources clean (soil, water, air)
  • have more physical and mental space

Given that one is in a position to make choices and improve their lifestyles, there are some things to remember before we set out to plan a budget for low waste living. The main thing to remember is that it is a long term process. You can’t throw away what you currently own and replace it with greener alternatives. That is quite the opposite of ‘sustainability’. Secondly, anything rash and quick is only going to result in failure. So if you really wish to make meaningful changes, go slow.

A few things to remember about your green purchase:

  1. An expensive alternative, but a more long lasting and durable one than your regular OTC brand.
  2. Wholesome in that not only is it durable, but no second thoughts need to be given on how to discard the packaging and how bad the effect of it will be on the environment. (Most green options come in minimal, plastic-free packaging.)
  3. Return on investment in terms of longevity of the product; so you end up purchasing less over a longer period of time.

So there you go! Hope this encourages you to shift gradually to low waste living. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments below. Thanks!

Lockdown 2.0

I am writing this as we enter the 2nd phase of national lockdown in our fight against Covid19, the virus that has run havoc across the world and was declared a pandemic by WHO in early March. India went into lockdown on March 24th. Earlier today, the PM announced that it will be extended till the 3rd of May.

Schools and colleges are closed, businesses have shut, film industries have stopped shooting and people are locked in, and working from home and co-parenting children who are home from school and trying to be resilient in the face of what is a first in modern history. Not since WWII has human kind faced such a situation at a global and such a collective level. While there have been hotspots always, like in zones ravaged by war and natural disasters, the scale at which the world has been brought to its knees is unprecedented. Healthcare workers, public officers and industries that are the very backbone of society have functioned marvelously, rightfully being called #CovidWarriors.

One would think it would bring countries together to find a solution and to help those with less. Clearly, its to each-his own as all countries grapple to flatten the curve and decide whether to keep people home or open the economy to help their countries functioning.

At such a time, EcoDeeds had decided to stop functions to reduce human contact and thereby decrease risks. Also, it didn’t seem appropriate to continue in the face of tragedy elsewhere.

But the work around sustainability, while not a priority but pretty relevant in these trying times, has to continue and so today, plans are in place to reopen soon and only ship out parcels once we are out of lockdown, which I hope is soon. We’ll be taking baby steps back into functioning. Till then, support small businesses in the coming days and months. Appreciate it. Stay safe!
